how to clean a wood fence without pressure washing

Your wood fence helps distinguish the separation between your backyard and that of your neighbors. They can also keep your pets from wandering too far away whenever they need to stretch their legs outside. However, their susceptibility to getting dirty makes it essential for wood fences to be cleaned consistently.

A pressure washer can be an easy and effective solution to keeping a wood fence clean. Unfortunately, that option isn’t possible or appealing to all homeowners. If you fall into either category, you will learn how to clean a wood fence without pressure washing.

What Is Pressure Washing?

Before diving into how to clean a wood fence without pressure washing, it’ll probably help first to explain what pressure washing entails. Pressure washing involves using a pressure washer to force off any buildup and dirt off a wood fence with a strong blast of water. A pressure washer usually uses batteries, electricity, or gas for power.

Why Not Pressure Wash A Wood Fence?

While a pressure washer can be a convenient means to clean extensive dirt and buildup, it comes with two drawbacks: first, they aren’t always cheap, so not everyone can purchase them. Secondly, the force at which the water is directed is anywhere from thirty to eighty times that of a standard hose. The power used by pressure washing can possibly create more damage to wood if it isn’t sturdy enough or if it’s too old. For these reasons, knowing how to clean a wood fence without pressure washing is important.

How To Clean A Wood Fence Without Pressure Washing

The good news is that there is no single way to go about how to clean a wood fence without pressure washing. In fact, you will have the opportunity to learn about four different ways to clean a wood fence without pressure washing. The options for how to clean a wood fence without pressure washing are as follows:

Option 1: Just Add Water

If the amount of dirt and buildup on your wood fence isn’t too overwhelming, spraying water from your garden hose will do the trick. Before applying water, though, you’ll want to use either a scraper or a brush to get off anything that water wouldn’t easily be able to force off the fence. Using your garden hose is just one way to approach cleaning your wood fence.

Option 2: Liquid Soap

If you don’t believe water alone will clean your wood fence sufficiently, use liquid dish soap. This involves mixing the liquid dish soap in warm water and cleaning your fence with a scrub brush. You can either use a standard scrub brush or a bristled outdoor broom to save your back.

Option 3: Cleaning Products

Do you want a substance that effectively removes any mold, mildew, or algae on your wood fence? Many different cleaning products and solutions are available to help with wood fences that need a more thorough cleaning. These include Mold Armor, household bleach, and even outdoor cleaners. Ensure that the products do not have harmful chemicals and are safe to use for your wood fence before applying. Just like with dish soap, using a scrub brush or outdoor broom will make cleaning easier.

Option 4: Vinegar And Baking Soda

Finally, if you want a homemade solution to clean your dirty wood fence, vinegar, and baking soda are reliable ingredients. Vinegar is considered effective against mold and mildew stains, while baking soda helps remove dirt. Once applied, you’ll need to let the vinegar and baking soda solution sit before scrubbing.

You can also use vinegar by itself to target algae. Where green algae are concerned, a solution of white vinegar combined with three times that amount in water is the most effective. A gallon of vinegar and a gallon of water mixed together will get the job done for brown algae spots. Whichever option you choose for how to clean a wood fence without pressure washing, don’t forget to use a brush or outdoor broom for the best results.
