All garage door upgrades are a good thing. They are upgrades, after all. All the same, you need to draw some boundaries. If you are to change everything, you may as well talk about a new garage door installation.
One more thing. Not all upgrades are good for everyone. It always comes down to what everyone needs, wants, and can afford. For example, your priority may be to fit both cars in a single garage and instead of spending much to convert the single to a double garage, you may want to convert the lifting system and make it high. Just to get a car lift.
It’s also important to point out that some upgrades are meant to improve function and some the appeal. And while function always rules, when it comes to garage doors, we offer a few ideas to cover the most common needs.
Get a smart garage door opener
Getting a WiFi-powered smart garage door opener is the smart thing to do. That’s if the existing opener is already old and must be replaced. But so that you know, most electric openers can be retrofitted to work with the WiFi. Once you download the app, you can easily control the status of the garage door (opening/closing) via your smartphone – no matter where you are. Some models come with extra features, like fire detectors. Or they can be set to turn on the lights. You tap on your phone and can let anyone you want in – or out.
Invest in new garage door locks
Now, if you get a garage door opener replacement, make sure it comes with an automatic lock. That’s one way to increase home security. If not, you can always add a new (deadbolt) security lock to further protect this entry point. Don’t forget that many break-ins (attempted or not) occur via the garage door. So, this would be a good upgrade.
Upgrade the hardware
Unless your garage door’s hardware looks good, change it. Since hardware defines the door’s decoration, you may want to search for solutions that best match your current home style. This is one way to refresh the garage door’s looks or, perhaps, alter a bit its style, based on the hardware you buy.
Paint the garage door
One more way to refresh the looks and overall style of the garage door is to paint it. If this is a wooden garage door and you don’t want to change its appearance, you can stain it. In any other way, you may not only refresh its color but also change the color.
Insulation
If this isn’t an insulated garage door, maybe it’s time to think of your home’s energy efficiency – and by extension, your wallet. To keep good temps indoors and stop wasting energy due to drafts coming in and warmth/cool air going out, insulate the garage door. There are several solutions for all types of garage doors. This upgrade is actually a must, since it has to do with money spent, and even more if you use the garage for various activities other than parking the car alone.
Replace the weather strips
Once again, for energy reasons and some good savings, get new weather seals. Weatherstripping the garage door is one of the best ways to improve the environment indoors and save money. Even if the side and the top strips are alright, check the bottom seal. Due to its position, it wears and tears faster while it should be in perfect shape. So, start there.
